“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household.” (Ephesians 2:19 NASB)

Meditation & Prayer: A couple without legal status recently asked me through my friend as to how to apply for the so called “Ten Years Green Card”. I was dumbfounded by such strange term that doesn’t exist in the Immigration Law book. After a little bit of research, I figure out it is just another gimmick attorneys employ to make a fast buck. But I am also fascinated by the fact that how desperate Chinese people desire to immigrate to other countries, especially coming to U.S as their first preference, either by legal or illegal means. It’s a bit ironic since China is no longer a third world country. In fact, China has become the 2nd largest economy of the world, where it’s annual GDP hovers around 7% growth rates each year that makes every country envious. Yet thousands of people apply for visas to come to the States as students, temporary workers, asylees, or else by marrying U.S. citizens to obtain permanent residence, again legally or illegally, including many corrupted officials buy up blocks of property in California by cash. This is quite symptomatic when a country cannot hold back its citizens from leaving their homes at the peak of the economic development, but instead choose to live in a foreign land, almost like a form of self-imposed exile. I couldn’t think of a better reason than seeing people from all sectors of life yearning for the freedom to pursuit happiness and to speak their own mind. The cost of freedom, however, could have unintended consequences, which might lead to cultural adjustment issues, depression, language barrier and tremendous pressure for survival, as they become pervasive among undocumented immigrants with little or no education. Brought up in an atheistic society where spiritual thinking is stifled and ridiculed if not prohibited, Chinese people’s mindset is almost programmed to seek after material success as their highest goal in life, while placing religious beliefs in the lowest category of intellectual understanding. But amazingly, a significant number of Chinese immigrants in the last 20-30 years have found God in churches, campus fellowship, Bible study groups and grass root ministries all over this country.  I have witnessed lives literally transformed as they experience Christ’s love shown genuinely and concretely by Christians in God’s household. Only God’s love transcends racial, cultural, gender, status and age barriers. Many experience, for the first time in their lives, the meaning of Christian living among brothers and sisters in Christ. They find church as their spiritual family and find themselves a new identity with a new purpose in life. For they are no longer strangers and aliens, but are fellow citizens with the saints in God’s household, far more precious than obtaining a “green card” status, knowing that we are all sojourners on this earth. As Christians, we are therefore called to bring more people into this one big spiritual family of God, and to help them gain heavenly citizenship in God’s Kingdom, in Jesus holy name I pray, amen.
