“Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:8)

Meditation & Prayer: In last week’s Sunday school, we learned about the meaning of “Obedience to God”, part of the spiritual qualities a Christian should possess in the sanctification process, preceded by Repentance and Trust in Him. In fact, our level of obedience to God is in direct proportion to how much we trust the Lord. (As exemplified in Abraham’s obedience to sacrifice Isaac) “Trust and Obey” reinforces our spiritual strength to foster a mindset that is in compliance with God’s will manifested in our thinking, our expression and behavior.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q00TXBPl9i4 But it is “easier said than done” in real life because it requires our total submission to his mandates. I rarely see someone who has such discipline to put down his ego or self-centered attitude when making all kinds of decisions in daily lives. I don’t expect non-believers to develop the inclination to humble in front of God, because they simply cannot grasp the spiritual meaning of Submission and Obedience. But for Christians, the struggle sometimes can be even more intense, simply for the reason that it is still very difficult to allow Jesus take over my driver seat. As Paul said: “We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” (II Corinthians10:5) In order to capture my rebellious thoughts, I must first become aware of the sinful thoughts that continue to occupy my mind. Not just awareness, I also need to actively take my thoughts captive, making sure that such thought is not allowed to stay in my mind, especially when this thought is in direct contradiction to the Bible. I have to constantly ask myself: What does God’s Word say about this thing that I am thinking on? I believe God’s Word is my ultimate weapon, for his word is the sharpest, most precise sword that actually discerns the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12) With this weapon, I am able to confront my thoughts, examine what I am thinking, and filter out any residues of unclean intentions. But what happens when I lose focus, or find myself focusing on my own desires and my own feelings, doing the opposite of what Christ commands of me, as it occurs quite often? I genuinely believe when I deliberately or inadvertently go astray, to a point that I ignore warning of the Holy Spirit, God would then take control of my life at the critical mass to prevent me from slipping off the cliff. I personally experienced this spiritual restoration after suffering a devastating stroke few years ago. How much I wish I could have been obedient to his will all along, rather than going through a fiery trial when I finally realize that Trust & Obey is the best way to live an abundant life, “for there is no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” In Jesus holy name I pray, amen.
